Panel OKs Lotte project despite military concern A Seoul City committee yesterday approved Lotte Group's plan to build the nation's highest building in southern Seoul, overriding the military's opposition which sprang from concerns over safety. The conglomerate plans to build a 112 story building that will house a department store, a hotel, offices, cinema and other amusement facilities. The Defense Ministry opposed the project in its report Monday citing concerns about the safety of flights that use a nearby military airport. But the city's committee for construction rejected the Air Force's advice, saying that the building won't pose danger to planes because they are far outside the flight safety zone. The plan is subject to final approval by both the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Songpa Ward Office, which governs the area. Further deliberation will be made over its design and other matters. If approved, Lotte plans to break ground for the 555 meter building in the second half of the year. It aims to finish construction by 2010. The plan is part of the group's 1 trillion won ($1 billion) project to construct a 26,500 pyeong (87,400 square meters) amusement park called the Second Lotte World in Jamsil, southern Seoul. It will be linked to Lotte World, one of Seoul's major theme parks. (davidpooh@heraldm.com) By Jin Dae woong 2006.02.23 |
